Palaces and castles are numerous in Spain and they form part of the major monuments and ancient buildings worth visiting while in the country. They not only showcase some of Spain’s epochs but also the great works of architecture of those eras and some of the most famed artists. Here are the top palaces and castles which cannot be missed while in Spain.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial: it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its unique and beautiful decorations. This is one of Spain’s most popular attractions and is in Madrid. It was a royal residence which still attracts thousands of tourists because of its magnificence. Some of the features that make the palace most outstanding include the interior decoration that is rich and done by some of Spain’s greatest artists. They include El Greco. Tiziano, Vecellie as well as Diego Rodriguez de Silva. It is also home to rare paintings which are well preserved and the ceiling is adorned by hundreds of frescos. It is simply a place you cannot miss in Spain.

Castillo de la Mota: the castle is a medieval fortress that is quite beautiful. It got the name La Mota from the mountain that it sits on and you will find it in the Valladolid province in Spain. It is mainly made of two parts with one being the massive towers of stone forming the citadel and the Santa Maria Mayor Abbey. You will find in the castle El Greco’s paintings, a mosque, and a Gothic church. The town can be viewed from one of the towers from where the beauty of the neighborhood id enjoyed. The town walls are also visible from here.

Castillo de Coca: it is among Spain’s most beautiful fortresses of the medieval times. It is a treasure well preserved as far as the Spanish medieval architecture is concerned and sits above Voltoya River in Coca Town. This castle has a deep and broad moat serving as its protection and also to behold is the magnificent interior decoration. Some of the features within it include geometric motifs and vault mosaics which are Gothic. The landscape around the castle is beautiful and you will enjoy spending some time around it after your tour.
