An Andalucia visit should include quaint Antequera which is in the province of Malaga. It is an exciting town which is full of history and culture that goes back 5,000 years covering the Bronze Age. The Iberian natives can be identified from the mystical burial mounds and tombs to offer a clearer historical timeline.
Further evidences stem from the presence of ancient remnants such as churches and cathedrals; Roman baths and Moorish castles as well as Renaissance fountains and Baroque bell towers shape the culture and traditions of the region.
Surrounding charms
Antequera is surrounded by lots of natural beauty with a typical medieval ambience as whitewashed houses line the streets with historical buildings neatly tucked away for the curious and the adventurous.
There are plenty of historical gems which can be discovered in Antequera; the El Torcal is considered a natural wonder in this part of the world in its lofty position on the mountain range to protect Antequera over the decades.
Vast plains form fertile and productive farmlands across La Vega with a constant supply from Guadalhorce River to produce the best of fruits and vegetables from this region.
An 800-meter limestone cliff called the Lovers’ Leap stands high to remind all and sundry of the tragic love story of a Christian boy falling for a Moorish girl who reciprocated his love. A statue of commemoration stands in the town plaza as a constant reminder.
The rock head Peña landscape that forms the image of an Indian hero stands out for miles like a guardian angel over the farmlands and fruit orchards while adding mystic and grandeur to the surroundings. Another natural and beautiful landscape is the limestone mountain range which forms thousands of rock formations in all sizes and shapes.
Historical sights
There are many charming historical sites in Antequera such as the European megalithic Dolmen sites that showcase megalithic stones of chambers and passageways which natives used in their funeral rituals.
An ancient cave stands nearby to display the hundreds of excavated skeletons in its inner chamber while exquisite masonry works line the El Romeral Tholos corridors and passageways.
Antequera’s historical monuments are part of the skilled Baroque and Renaissance style architecture called the Golden Age with many religious sites built.
Further fascinating architectural monuments sprouted up between the 13th century and 18th century. These include the Alcazaba, the Najera Palace, Roman baths, the Giants’ Arch and the Ducal Palace.
