Basque country’s largest city is Bilbao. It is an important commercial and industrial center. The city is located in the Bay of Biscay. The name Bilbao means two sides. It is because the city was built on all two sides of the mouth. Bilbao’s landmark remains to be Guggenheim Museum completed only in 2007.
In Bilbao’s heart, is Mercado de la Ribera. It is mostly referred to as the square. In Europe, it is the indoor market that is largest. The shops here open Monday through Saturday. It is a perfect place for shopping tours. In the center of Bilbao, you can find many restaurants, bars and many shops. This is especially rampant in Old Town.
Plaza Nueva is a lovely and lively place. There are restaurants and shops here at the arcades. There are markets especially on Sunday while in the summertime, one can enjoy folklore and evening concerts. The Plaza Eliptica is also a place of interest. Here you may visit Palacio de Chavarri. It was built back in 1894.
Palacio de la Diputacion is a beautiful palace and definitely worth a visit. It is on the Gran via Bilbaina Street. Also worth seeing are University Universidad Deusto, the Teatro Campos Eliseos theater, Teatro Arriaga theater, Bolsa de Bilbao stock market and the town hall. All these buildings are worth visiting.
There are also religious buildings in Bilbao. The most religious is Catedral de Santiago. It is gothic. Others include Iglesia de San Nicolas, Santuario de Nuestra and Baroque tower among others.
The Guggenheim museum is filled with wonders to behold. There are many other modern architectural pieces in Bilbao. These include Torres Isozaki which is on Paseo Uribitarte. It was a design of a Japanese architect.
The Zubizuri Bridge, Santiago Calatrava’s work is a sight to see. One gets the impression of a sail bloated in the wind.
The Metro Bilbao subway has a design that is functional and has no frills. Norman Foster was the brain behind the construction of the subway lines. The materials used for this construction were glass, concrete and steel.
The most popular museum in Bilbao is Guggenheim Museum. It has the most visitors every year. Museo de Bellas Artes is a museum concentrating on fine arts. There are many works of Tapies, Chillida, Dali, Van Dyck, Gauguin, Cezanne, Sorolla, and Murillo among many others. Other museums include Museo de Reproducciones , Museo Vasco and Museo de Bellas among others. The areas to explore are many in Bilbao and you will be delighted especially if you love explorations.
